What is a Music Key?

When more than one key is played simultaneously, that starts to represent a chord, which is when 2 or more keys are played together.

What is a Music Scale?

A musical scale is the grouping or ordering of specific notes that work in combination to form a fundamental key with a certain mood, emotion, or sound.

Songs in the major scale are typically happy & uplifting.
Songs in the minor scale are typically emotional & thought-provoking.

There are many other scales to discover that cover the widest array of musical moods.

Understanding Keys on a Handpan:

To help make sense of this, let’s consider a traditional piano keyboard.

Most modern pianos have up to 88 keys; 52 white keys and 36 black keys, that increase in octave from left to right.

The musical keyboard (Not the same as your Mac or mechanical typing keyboard…) typically starts at A0 on the furthest left key and incrementally increases in pitch all the way up to C8 on the furthest right.

“Middle C” is a common phrase among musicians, and also represents the middle note of most piano keyboards. Middle C is more specifically the key of C4, as it is the key of C, in the 4th Octave.

Traditional handpans are manufactured in a specific key and a specific scale.

The most popular tuning for a handpan (/hand pan) is the key of D3 minor, being D in the 3rd octave, in the minor scale. Handpans can however be tuned to a wide array of keys and scales, typically between B2 and F6.
